Generative engine optimization (GEO)

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your brand and pages cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini — instead of (or alongside) ranking a blue link.

Also searched as: GEO, generative engine optimization, GEO meaning, optimize for AI search.

Where classic SEO optimizes to rank a page, GEO optimizes to be the source an AI answer quotes. The two overlap — pages that rank #1 in Google are cited by ChatGPT roughly 3.5× more often than pages outside the top 20 — but GEO adds tactics aimed specifically at how language models select and quote sources.

The highest-evidence GEO tactics are concrete: put the direct answer in the first third of the page, pack content with statistics and named sources, keep sections short and question-headed, and earn third-party mentions (Reddit, YouTube, G2, comparison listicles) because most AI citations come from sources other than your own domain.

GEO is read-and-measure before it is write. Knowing which prompts already cite you, which cite competitors, and which cite no one is the prerequisite — that audit is exactly what an AI Visibility Agent produces.

Adding statistics to a page raised its AI-citation visibility by ~41% in a controlled study.
